News 2014/11/27 A side event "Mediterranean Cooperation on Climate Change: Union for the Mediterranean" to take place at the UNFCCC COP in Lima, 4 December 2014.

The secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean to organise a side event "Mediterranean Cooperation on Climate Change: Union for the Mediterranean" together with the European Commission and three Mediterranean partner countries (Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey) during the next COP20.

It will take place on 4 December at 18.00 in the EU Pavilion in Lima (Peru).

The event will showcase how a complex system of various relevant initiatives, programs and structures may be brought together in order to create synergies, while including stakeholders, private sector and various levels of governance. The interventions will concretely focus on the established cooperation within the Union for the Mediterranean Climate Change Expert Group (UFMCCEG), namely the agreed work plan and its relevance to the international climate change negotiations. It will present the outcomes of its first meeting, as well as some existing and planned initiatives in order to enhance regional cooperation on climate change in the region according to the priorities identified by the Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean. 

The three partner countries will then present their ongoing national climate change strategies and activities. Their presentations will offer the opportunity to stress the potential for further expansion of climate action to other countries of the region, under the principles of variable geometry, partnership and inclusiveness.
